Tessa Andrews
Associate Professor
Columns_2019_1.jpg

I am a discipline-based education researcher (DBER), which means that I conduct research to better understand teaching and learning at the undergraduate level within a discipline. I do so by drawing on training in both biology and the social sciences. Read more about my research interests on the Research page.

Alex Waugh
Genetics Doctoral Student

What knowledge differentiates the leading experts on photosynthesis from the leading experts on teaching photosynthesis to undergraduates? Alex is interested in the knowledge that allows teachers to transform and repackage their complex understanding of subject matter into a form that students can more readily understand. His prior work in the lab focused on the cost-benefit analysis instructors undertake as they consider using random call in their classrooms.

Hannah Ericson
Genetics Doctoral Student
Hannah_2021.jpg

Hannah studies how department heads think in regards to creating change within their respective departments and what motivates them to pursue change. Her research interests include how to foster long-term change within higher education and change theories.

Cristie Donham
Postdoctoral Researcher

Cristie investigates the knowledge that biology instructors use to plan, implement and reflect on effective active-learning instruction and how that knowledge is important for student learning. Her research interests include metacognition and learning how to support the success and retention of students from groups historically underrepresented in STEM.
